HOHLOMA IS A RUSSIAN FOLK CRAFT THAT EXISTED FOR ALMOST 300 YEARS. THE CRAFT WAS ORIGINATED IN NIZHNY NOVGOROD REGION. INHABITANTS WERE ALWAYS BUSY IN PAINTINGS OF THE WOODEN UTENSILS. Hohloma is a Russian folk craft that has been existing for 300 years already. Today we’ll tell you some facts about the phenomenon which is unique both for Russia and for the world art.

The craft was born on the territory of the present Nizhny Novgorod region.

Inhabitants of the villages have always been busy with painting of wooden utensils.

Local craftsmen knew how to turn simple wooden utensils into golden ones.

Traditional technique has undergone some changes in modern times when a finished utensil acquires the color of honey under the influence of high temperature. The color combined with a metal layer seems golden.

The utensils do not only look beautiful, they are also very solid.

Hohloma utensils can handle high temperatures without any damage to the lacquer or paint.

Our contemporaries are trying to make the ancient technology more perfect choosing materials that are more suitable for thermal treatment.

Assortment of hohloma utensils is as follows: cups, plates, spoons, barrels and salt cellars.

Nowadays they also make pictures, panels, tureens and salad-dishes.

Craftsmen use several variants of hohloma utensils processing. They can choose different temperature regimen, duration of drying and artistic devices.

The utensils are made of lime, aspen and birch. Models are made of dried wood.

As soon as a utensil is ready, it is dried again and only then it is sent to a finisher who prepares it for painting.
